🤝 US Physician Groups

💼 What Defines US Physician Groups?

US Physician Groups are autonomous medical practices or associations of physicians that operate outside of a traditional hospital-owned or corporate healthcare system. They vary widely in size, ranging from small, single-specialty practices to large, multi-specialty clinics that function as Integrated Delivery Systems (IDSs).

These groups are crucial for delivering both primary care and specialty services in the US healthcare landscape.

🔗 The Integration Trend (IDS)

The concept of the Integrated Delivery System (IDS)—a coordinated network linking various providers via common ownership or contract—is increasingly influential. Large physician groups often aim for integration to:

  • Improve Quality: Coordinate care for patients with complex needs to improve outcomes.

  • Reduce Waste: Eliminate unnecessary services, enhancing efficiency and financial sustainability.

  • Align Incentives: Transition away from the fragmented fee-for-service (FFS) model towards value-based care, where financial incentives align with quality, not just volume.

⚔️ What Challenges Do Independent Groups Face?

Independent physician groups face significant pressure to remain autonomous amidst the rising power of large hospital systems:
